London clipper Titanic (CVN 88), which had sailed from Southampton in the early hours of December 7, 1912, on its way from New York to Liverpool. It was the first ship ever to run aground on a large, shallow island in the North Atlantic.
Two decades later, this tragedy had come back to haunt the Royal Navy.
The first ship to ever reach the island with a crew rescued it and put it on to safety. The second was taken in 1842, when the sinking of the Titanic was still in progress, after some 400 sailors had been trapped in a lifeboat.
The three surviving officers of the sinking were given honorary degrees, including Commander Sir Charles M. Gairdner, who, as well as his post on the crew, had spent eight years serving with the German U-boat “U-571″.
“The ‘U-571′ was responsible for the tragic fate of hundreds of British sailors during World War II,” writes the Guardian.
“For nine days in April, 1942, the U-571, known as the ‘Black Death’, carried out a campaign of sabotage aimed at disrupting the German shipping network through which the British sailors were carrying out their military missions.
“By the end of the week the number of casualties on the U-571′s service on the battle of Britain was just under 2,000. By the time the U-571 was finally grounded on April 9, it had caused a further 23 deaths by starvation.
“As a result, in recognition바카라사이트 of this and due to its cjarvees.comontribution to the Allied victory over Hitler’s military Nazis, it was commissioned with the title ‘Knight of the Great White Fleet’.”
The Guardian adds that, “this honour was awarded on May 1st 1942 to Lieutenant Co바카라lonel William McGovern in memory of a British officer who lost his life during the war.”
In a blog post, one of the surviving members of the ship’s crew, Colonel Francis R. Wilson, said that, “My own personal and collective thoughts are that of the people and their relatives, for whom we have lost so much, and for those who were also at sea on this great and tragic night. To the memory of my shipmates and of the sailors who made all the extraordinary efforts to save them, I ask you to continue to give generously to them, to their families and to those affected by the tragedy.
